Critique Elemental - Earth by mippieArt

Disclaimers: I am neither a visual artist of any accomplishment or training, nor a photo manipulator of any notoriety. I am also a friend and collaborator with the artist.

The work is one of four which comprise a series of the traditional 'elements' of wiccan and alchemical theory; the series itself is not a subject of this critique although this viewer will not that there is a consistency of talent and point of view exhibited in the four, as such this final element can be viewed as a continuation of the development of the artist and her skills and point of view. This work, earth, carries the lovely hues of the element, deeper browns greens and yellows echoed in two of the four butterflies in the composition. Air's interaction, as an embrace with sky is reflected in the blue of the third butterfly and the slight bluing of the blurred and misted background. The model stock chosen is a finely detailed figure in an advanced Eka Pada Rajakapotasana position with a fine arched stretch opening the chest. The artist has maintained all of the detail of the figure and two of the tree butterflies, a talent and technique of style that I have continuously applauded her for, as well as urging other photo manipulators and digital artists to do; yes, the image size requirements multiply quickly, but the impact upon the viewer, and the quality of the images rendered increase geometrically. This is a fine example of Leana’s talents and abilities on display, her pride of work is demonstrated, and her abilities completely open to the viewer by maintaining the entire detail and information load of the image. Of note, also is her use of blurring on the 3rd butterfly and on the background to create an illusion of depth and perspective. I also note that the glint of light reflected from the body jewelry of the model is maintained; much applause for that elements survival of manipulation.

I will note two areas where I remain having some suggestions for the artist, and I am sure, that with time and the continuing growth of her workbox of talents these small elements will improve. The cracking surface applied by brush or mask or actual digital painting (I am NOT, as noted, a Photoshop artist) lacks the dimensionality of the remainder of the image; failing to appear as a cracked dried earthen material. It is a minor portion contributing to the image, but for a desert dweller, a consideration. Secondly and more prominently the twig and grass elements painted lovingly upon both the extended model leg and the folded shin lack an integration with attendant dimensionality at the forward surface. As I have noted this is a minor element to the image as an entirety but did distract this viewer; and I am sure that as Leana’s abilities continue to grow she will remedy this small portion of the image. I am also slightly uncertain regarding the heavy hue weighting into the yellows of the pallet; that consistency might be balanced by a slight blue shift at the upper reaches of the images ‘sky’ illusion; but again, I am very uncertain on this and the effects that it would have upon the image as a whole. Here I dabble literary and am reminded of the descriptions of the elemental forces and colorations offered in “The House of Night” teenage novel series (a slight raising of the nose except for that author’s selection of detailed descriptions of those elemental attributes). (puts my snobbery away, my audience is of a more mature experience and age stratification and Her work was widely popular and lucrative) (shrug)

The composition is perfect, the light and darks balance the concentration of vision of the viewer, and the elements guide the eye and echo the impending motional closure of the Eka Pada Rajakapotasana the arch and ‘O’ of the soul. A delightful image which, brought joy to my heart, and longing to my mind. Thank you, Leana, for this opportunity to express my opinion, and to view another fine work by you.
