Really interesting image. It owes a lot of its poignancy to the clarity of her hands and eyes in contrast to the gauzy sense of the rest. Nice how the symbolic blood-red color of the gauze from her tutu becomes literal blood around her mouth. Since she's clearly alive, and not sporting vampire fangs, I think its safe to assume that even the actual blood is symbolic, and its position - around her mouth - is significant.

Two things immediately sprang to mind. One: the potential for extreme, vicious competitiveness in some professional ballet circles, and how words can cut. Two: Isaiah 6:5, from the Torah, "Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips."

With this gut reaction, I am fascinated by her expression - intense, unrepentant. It is as if she is not aware that what she has done has harmed another, that the person she is looking at might disapprove, that her deeds have marked her.

Lovely.
